Americans obsessed with race?

Hey, all. I’m curious to know what people think of Americans and race. I’ve heard from many non- Americans say that Americans are obsessed with race. However, I believe that we pay a lot of attention to race because each race faces different obstacles whether it be in the form police brutality, sexual violence, or even discrimination from other minority races. I’m curious to know what you all think about this topic.

It’s because our society is built upon a foundation of white supremacy. 
If we’re not acknowledging and discussing how race impacts our daily lives, we’re not doing enough to push back against systemic oppression.

What happened to all the other comments, they weren’t offensive or rule breaking as far as I saw so far. What gives?

Because America forces it in our faces. 
Races are already separated as soon as your born. “What is your ethnicity” asked on every important document you come across. Especially job applications, Applying for an apartment, going to college. Buying a house? A Car, ACT/SAT tests. Surveys. Etc. 
It’s everywhere. 
Why do You need to know what my skin tone is just to own something?? 
I’m an American. I shouldn’t be considered a “minority” that’s mind boggling to me. I’m a “minority” because I’m not white?? Like the the “majority” of population in this country? 
Absurd!  Labeling to me is dividing! It’s excluding me from
being a proud American. I’m constantly reminded that I’m a “minority”. 
It’s taught to our young children in education(So much history is being omitted on purpose! Which would bring us together than apart)
This country came about by racism.Literally forced out and murdered natives! And Forced slavery and don’t care to deal with the repercussions. ETC.
The aftermath. Fix that.  
No one is obsessed if it’s the only thing that’s prevalent to America. It’s only talked about because it’s a real problem. 
Like an open wound? If you don’t heal it, it will get infected and then worse. 
If it weren’t an issue It would simply not exist.

Speaking for myself, I’m not obsessed with race at all. You could be purple for all I care.  I think people are obsessed with race when it comes to things like racism, dating, and other stuff. If I could have it my way I’d have everyone just mark themselves as human.

I’ve had more everyday conversations about race in America than anywhere else I’ve lived.

Definitely. Even when talking about human issues race has to be brought in. Race becomes a factor in topics that have nothing to do with race. We divide each other and judge by the color of skin. Even "affirmative action" is saying hey, we don't care about who you are or what you've done, we only care about your skin color. Something you have no control over and is completely superficial is the core of your identity and is the only thing that gives you value. AA is praised and I don't understand how people don't see we're bringing racism back to an active role. We want to literally bring segregation back! I think it's because we obsess over it. If every individual person "moved on" as in didn't forget history but walked forward and looked ahead and stopped thinking about race and seeing skin color when you look at someone, I think we would be in a much better place in America.

I think it’s a combination of things. For one, races in the US aren’t as integrated (culturally) as they are in some other places, so the differences are highlighted. And as an other commenter said, American history is characterized by white supremacy. And we’re such a young country that we’re still experiencing the effects of racism.
