RSV - not admitted?

Question

We’re currently at the hospital and my baby was diagnosed with RSV. They’re not admitting him though because his oxygen levels haven’t dropped too low. He was 6.5 weeks premature and I’m extremely nervous. We came in initially because you could see his rib cage when he would breathe because he was having such a hard time. Of course it looks better now because they gave him a breathing treatment. Has anyone ever heard of them just discharging a baby who was premature and has RSV like this? I don’t want him to have to be admitted but I’m terrified of going home at the same time

Honestly I’d be nervous to go home too but I would tell the hospital you don’t feel comfortable leaving until they make sure his oxygen levels stay at a normal number for a few hours because I mean the breathing treatment is sometimes just a temporary fix. What happens if the baby starts to have a hard time again? Bring him in again tonight When you could have just stayed earlier. Sometimes they just want to get rid of people. You have to be stern and if they refuse, then say ok.. then I want in writing that you guys are clearing and discharging my son who you just diagnosed with RSV and that it’s ok for him to go home like this. With a doctors signature. Do not leave without that.

Oh no Kim!!  I’m so sorry!  I was just told by our pediatrician that rsv would be an automatic admittance for my preemie (my sister’s 2 month old baby boy has it but went home after a few hours in the er).  I’d be so scared to go home too 😫 I wouldn’t hesitate to go back in if you’re even slightly concerned that something has changed or isn’t improving.  Good luck mama and keep us updated.

My son just got over RSV and he developed bronchitis too, he had a scary cough and lots of wheezing took him to the hospital and they didn’t admit him either. I just watched him very closely and did lots of steam showers and sat with him tons of suction and our pediatrician prescribed a nebulizer and that helped too just keep a close watch and no visitors lots of sanitizing and hand washing and baby will be better soon it took my little one like 8 days super scary but baby will be fine. 😔

My son had RSV and did not have to be hospitalized. That said, he also did not have breathing problems/treatments. Have a discussion with them about your concerns, ask to have him monitored longer etc.

My daughter had rsv and was not admitted Bc her oxygen was good too the doctor said it tends to be worse on day 5 which happened to be the day I brought her in so That night I sat in the bathroom with the hot water running to help her breath a little better & just had her sleep in my room and watched her closely I didn’t have to take her back in and she did get better after day 5
