Are wedding guest supposed to sit on a certain side depending on if their there for the bride or the groom?

Depends on your families. My wedding was everyone sit wherever and to blend/merge families coming together. We did that so people could get to know each other and also because my side had more people and we didn’t want it to be obvious. 
Literally up to the bride and groom how they want it to be handled. 
I had a sign similar to this:

It doesn't matter. Some people have them combined and some people have them separated from brides side and grooms side. It just depends on what you want

If there’s a “this bride’s/groom’s family side” then yes

Traditionally, the bride’s family would sit on the left and the groom’s on the right (if you’re facing the altar/officiant). Some couples state that everyone is family now and to sit where you please. :) Totally the couple’s choice.

I’ve been to weddings where the bride/grooms families sit all together, and I’ve been to weddings where they sit on separate sides. It doesn’t matter!
