Should I buy my 5 year old a tablet?

My child is struggling in math and I've never wanted any added screen time but now I'm wondering if it would benefit her to have a game like learning setting. I struggle getting her to work with me on paper. Would this help her or add unnecessary screen time?

Nope. I would take her to a learning center, get evaluated, and have a tutor work 1:1. 
Also 5 is still young... so give her some time.

no. i agree with the other comment. if you're worried i'd talk to her teacher about ways to support her at home. she can play games related to math outside of mobile games. i used to be a math tutor for various grades while i was in hs. 
the first thing i'd do with a new student was not just where they struggled, but HOW they struggled and how they best learned. sometimes i would make up games or bring models for a visual aid, use songs, etc. 
sometimes it's also a matter of when they grasp concepts, some people take longer than others. i'm one of them lool but my tutor growing up was always super patient with me and able to identify my problem areas.

My daughters school has them play an online math game and it makes learning more fun to them. A lot of education is done through screen time now. I loved the educational games from back when I was a kid (math/reading blaster, spelling blizzard, etc). So I'm for the games.

No. She is 5, so she is still really young and will be a little young to evaluate. What is it she is struggling with? She may not connect the value to the number. You are better off giving her manipulatives and stop trying to do math on paper for now. You can use cheerios, coins, etc. Just make sure they are the same thing, and it helps if they are the same color at first. Maybe get some unifex cubes. There is no reason for her to go over 10 until she has mastered it. Working on counting, counting on from a number, etc. I would also get a number line, write the numbers on flash cards, and you can have her put corresponding cheerios (or whatever) on the correct number. If she can't count, and if she doesn't recognize the value of a number a game isn't going to do much. I also wouldn't sit an do anything with her for more than 10min.
