He broke up with me because of his sexual trauma

I’ll try to make it as short as possible. Met this guy in September, made it official at the end of November. He broke up with me on Thursday.

The last time we saw each other was two weeks ago (we were long distance) when he shared with me that he had been sexually abused as a child which is why he hadn’t initiated anything intimate with me while we were together. I wasn’t in any rush to do anything sexual so I hadn’t thought too much of it at that point, I figured we’d get to it eventually. I was the third person he had told. He had told his last girlfriend (four years ago) and his mom.

He’s also expressed over the last months, including the last time we saw each other, that he planned on us continuing to date when he moves in June (out of state) and we talked about it that same night. He said he usually starts to shut down emotionally in this stage of relationships due to the trauma but that he had been missing this part of his life for a long time (love, relationships, what have you) and wanted to explore it.

Anyways, he ended things on Thursday after he had his first therapy session (therapist told him it can be hard to heal during in long distance relationships because of the uncertainty) and while I was so hurt, I totally supported him. He is going through a lot of change right now and I know he feels overwhelmed.

The hard part is he told me he thinks I deserve more than he can give and he thinks I’m really sweet but it feels like too much for him. To me, it sounded like a cop out and that he really meant he just didn’t have feelings for me anymore. But it’s hard for me to accept considering he just shared all of those intimate details of his life with me, made plans for our future, etc and then abruptly cut it off. My friends/family said it’s because he’s scared and overwhelmed, which I could definitely see and understand. Am I just being insecure? It’s just an emotional time and I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around it because it came out of nowhere
