Our City Gov Sucks at Getting Stuff Done

My fiancé and I have lived at our local fire department for a little over a year. The building holds fire trucks, firefighters’ office/hall, police station, dmv, and court. He’s volunteered a lot of his time, we have had a somewhat bumpy time here. It’s an out dated building with lazy professionals. At least on the city side of things...

It was a pain in the ass getting in, because although we communicate with the chief firefighter, the city is the landlord. Anyway, I was 8 months pregnant and had about two weeks before I had to fly and have my baby (we are a small town in Alaska) and they were taking their sweet ass time. No cleaning had been done, no floor was laid (and it was laminate-it has to set for a couple days), our toilet and dryer were broken...so that sucked.

Now flash forward, we’ve lived here and had our daughter here since she was two days old. It’s winter and pipes burst. We get a call saying the fire alarms and sprinklers are going off in the fdp building (our apartment is connected to all of that). We rush up and see that the sprinklers are raining inside the police department’s garage! In about two weeks, they clean up and start to repair the damage. As the tear down one of the walls they find black mold. This is where I get salty. Because they didn’t tell the chief of the fdp, they told the city. Then a couple of days after the discovery, my father tells us about the black mold. We packed up and started staying with my parents.

I’m pissed because this is the second, THE SECOND TIME, they have stumbled upon black mold in this building. Both by accident. They are now getting the mold tested, but if you remember back to the sprinklers going off, they opened doors, had fans all trying to dry it out. But I’m footing so, put my family and our town in a unhealthy situation.

People they are putting at risk!: My 1yr old, myself and my fiancé, the chief of the fdp has hs kids every weekday for classes, elderly people come and wait at the dmv. ALL in distance for the spores to escape! Spores can travel with you. They can make you sick. But the fact that they haven’t tested the WHOLE building after the FIRST mold discovery pisses me the F&$@ off.

Now we have been trying to save money to pay off student loans, credit card bills, diapers, maybe a possible down payment on a home...all in jeopardy because we have to move. We have to spend more money we are trying to save for our family, into finding a safe place to stay. That isn’t the fire department or police department. They are stating we can STAY...wtf!? Why would I? You (City) can’t event spend money to have an up to code building, why would I?
