Text from my ex, what does it mean?

My ex and I broke up about 4 months ago. We’d been together for a year and 3 months. He called things off because he wanted to focus on his self or whatever. He hit me up a week after and said he wants to be friends and we spoke a little for about a month. After a while I cut that off and only heard from him on occasions. Last time we spoke was New Years. He hit me up last week and said “he’s sorry for the random text but he hopes I’m doing good in school and he hopes I’m happy and that I have people rooting for me” I thought it was really nice of him, but I’m still wondering what it means, any ideas?
