Birth control help

Ok this might be a stupid question but I’ve tried googling it and I can’t find an answer... so birth control you’re safe while taking the placebo pills. And then fine once you start taking the next pack, but how does that work? Since when you start taking birth control initially it takes 2 weeks to kick it. So wouldn’t you stop taking the pill for a week make it inactive or whatever?
