No ultrasound until 20 weeks?

Hey all! I live in Canada, and I’m 9 weeks pregnant! I’m going for my second prenatal visit on March 4th, and just called my doctor to ask when I should be expecting my first ultrasound! This is my very first pregnancy, and I’m pretty excited/nervous! My doctor told me my first ultrasound would be when I was at my 20 week mark. I really don’t like this, and I haven’t heard of someone waiting that long before. Should I go to a clinic or the hospital and ask for one? Or should I just wait out the 20 weeks? Just very unsure! I thought you were supposed to get your first ultrasound early in pregnancy to get a more accurate due date and make sure everything was developing the way it should!
Update: I ended up booking at a small private place a few hours away from me for a 12 week scan. It’ll only cost me 80$, and I’m getting it done on March 30th! Crisis avoided!

I would 100 percent pay for a private US. I had one at 7.5 and my next is at 11.5 no way I would wait 20 weeks to see if my babies okay.

Its actually pretty normal. That's the only ultrasound I've received for both of my pregnancies, and most insurance companies only cover 2 unless you're high-risk and require more.

It’s not uncommon in some areas to only have the one ultrasound as long as everything is progressing normally.
You could pay for a private one sooner if you’d like.

Where are you in Canada? I’m in Ontario and I got my dating scan done around 6 or 7 weeks, one at 12 weeks for NT scan and then anatomy scan at 19 weeks. I’ve never heard of only getting one at 20 weeks

That’s weird! What province are you in? I’m in NL and my first ultrasound is at 10w and I’ll have another at 20w.

I’m in Alberta, I was sent for a dating scan after blood test confirmation at 8+4 weeks.  Then we opted for the Nuchal Translucency ultrasound at 12/13 weeks. That one has a short window so waiting till 20 weeks doesn’t work.  I’m high risk so I’ve had lots more since then too. But my cousin with healthy pregnancies only had the NT and anatomy ultrasounds.

That’s a long wait! I knew it was going to be a long wait between my first one (8 weeks) and my second one at 20 weeks, so I paid for a private one. Maybe you can get one done if you pay out of pocket? 🤷🏼‍♀️

That’s common. I paid for a private scan with my first and it was a waste to me. So I didn’t do them again with the rest of my kids.

Normal in Canada, but look at private clinics. I’m in Ontario and went to uC Baby at 16 weeks and 28 weeks, they had a package for 2 visits and gender reveal for around $100. Worth it!

It's really not uncommon for some places. If you want to go to a private ultrasound you can though if they offer it around. You'll have to pay for it though. Different countries use different precautions especially with ultrasounds and listening to the heartbeat. They probably also wait because that's the time everything should be formed. No need to panic but I'd say go have a private one now then just go to your anatomy scan at 20 weeks.
