Strict parents

Did you grow up with strict parents that hit you as a child (it was their way of discipline). As an adult now do you have a good relationship with them?

I was hit until 16-17. I moved out at 18. I still talk to my parents as normal but we don’t have that bond where I can call them and talk on the phone joke and laugh. We text once a week asking how things are going and that’s it.

I’m a bit of a shy/quiet person, I’m trying to figure out if my relationship with my parents isn’t great because of that or being hit. My fiancé and his mom are best friends and I really wish me and my parents were too
