What to expect when partners family member dies?

My boyfriends mother died yesterday. He already shaved his head and face bald due to it (he had long hair before this) and burst a blood vessel in his eye from crying. I’m trying my best to be supportive during this time and allow him to do as he pleases but what should I expect? Is it normal for them to change themselves? Is there anything specific I should be doing? He snapped at me last night because i simply asked him what he needed and he said “I don’t know, my mother has never died before” so that doesn’t work. I’ve been mainly just making sure he is eating and being him food so he will. He just claims he isn’t hungry. Im not sure what to expect
