What would cause my dog to growl at me?

My dog has been growling at me randomly lately. Today I was petting his back and he did a low growl at me and then I kissed his head today and he growled at me again. Idk why. I have never been mean to him, of course I would never ever abuse an animal. It seems like it’s coming out of nowhere?

Maybe it's sick or injured. They try very hard to hide pain. Might be worth a visit to a vet.

It sounds like he needs to see the vet. He could be in pain or sick.  Animals are good at hiding it for the most part. Maybe someone else could have abused him when you werent looking
