Active labor?

If i dont go into active labor by myself what happens? Does anyone know? Im a first time mom and dont know what to expect im not scared of giving birth im scared of not going into active labor myself. Ima at 39 weeks and really havent felt anything just some mild back pain and baby girl moving and some cramping in my stomach. Went to the dr and said my cervix is super soft and it could b any day but it doesnt feel like it. Im just curious has anyone gone threw this? What happens if i dont go into labor im just very nervous and anxious about that. And acourse i didnt even ask my doctor when i should of luckily i have an appointment this friday to see her again.
