Having student in room during pelvic exam?

Question

Have you ever been asked to allow a student to watch you get your pelvic exam? Do you feel comfortable with another person in the room just staring into your vagina while the doctor checks you? I feel like I would like to have as few people in the room as possible. But I also understand the need for training. Is it rude to ask not have anyone extra in the room??

They ask you for a reason. If you aren’t comfortable with it just say so. It’s very common in all medical fields. No one will even bat an eye if you say no. Promise you’re probably 1 of 10 appointments that they can use. If you’re curious, ask if there’s a specific reason to use you if that changes things. If not, deny it if you don’t want it.

I wouldnt say its rude but in all honesty I'd recommend getting over your concern for it. When you give birth theres likely to be multiple people all in there, I had 5. I really sont understand why people get so uncomfortable over it, they're medical professionals.

I was seen at a teaching hospital and honestly I prefer it so much more. I feel like the doctor spends more time with me and explains things more thoroughly. At my anatomy scan they explained everything to us. It was so great. I had a resident deliver my baby and the doctor was explaining everything to the student in the room. Afterwards when they were checking my fundus they noticed my uterus is deviated to the right and apparently it’s rare so they bought in other students to feel it and I was checked more often. They’ve always asked if I’m okay with students in the room and I’ve never felt pressured into having them there. I honestly love having them.

I can understand why someone would feel uncomfortable. But I also understand that person needs training and what not. I would feel better if my doctor asked hey can this person be in the room if not it’s ok type of deal rather than hey they are gonna be in here

I’m asked like every time. I don’t have a problem with it. They have to learn somehow and they’re very respectful. If you aren’t comfortable than decline.

They have to learn but there are other women who would be comfortable with it so they'll get a chance to learn regardless. It isn't rude to say no, it's your right for your privacy

Not rude at all to decline. I had students in the room with me and it wasn’t weird, but it is 100% up to you and how comfortable you are.

Bc of everything going on I’d say no. No need for an additional person in the same room as me. More exposure. But if it was a normal day, I wouldn’t mind. They are learning and one day will be in the room on their own. They are all professionals and it’s their job. I wouldn’t see it different as my doctor doing the check. It’s not like it’s a random creepy person who is just curious.

Yes. It's pretty common. But they ask you and if you arent comfortable, say no. 
I was asked if I was okay with a resident doing my iui and I said no. But she was there in the room watching. It doesnt bother me

Yes, i have been asked many times. Sometimes I'm fine and others I'm not. So don't feel like your obligated to have a random student in there. Your not rude it's your choice.
