How does maternity leave work? I’m confused help.

I’m a first time mom and I’m working from home due to the virus. I’m so confused about how and when to apply for maternity leave. I’m die in July love in USA in Michigan. I’ve been with my current employer since February left my old job for better opportunity. Because we are all working from home I have no idea how to reach HR I do have a supervisor that I could probably ask him. If any of you ladies know how maternity leave work or if I even qualify for it please do help me out a little? Also if I can’t get maternity pay can I apply for anything else? Any and all help is appreciated. Thank you

You need to speak with your company. There are several factors that determine if you qualify for FMLA which is federal job protection. It’s 12 weeks of unpaid leave. Some companies provide options for employees who don’t qualify. Some don’t. Some companies have a paid maternity leave plan. Some don’t. Depending on how you give birth some consider it short term disability. Most federal assistance programs don’t pay maternity leave but your state/city/county may have something available for financial assistance. Also depending on where you are different types of leave may apply. I worked up until the day before I had my son. My company provides 16 weeks full paid maternity/paternity leave to anyone employed over a year. My c section made me eligible for 8 weeks 100% pay short term disability. 12 weeks FMLA protection, and an additional 10 weeks of optional unpaid leave. Nothing could start until the day I delivered unless my doctor approved earlier short term disability for something prior to delivery. You need to speak with HR about your options. Don’t be surprised if there aren’t any paid options. The US is the absolute worst country for maternity leave unless you have an employer with amazing benefits.

You DO NOT qualify for FMLA so no you dont have maternity leave with a garenteed spot to return to, you can maybe take an unpaid leave of absence buf your job can be gone by the time you return you dont qualify for FMLA so the employer doesnt have to let you take anything and be off at all

You should ask your supervisor, but if you just started in February idk if you’re going to get maternity leave🤔 at my old job (I’m in California by the way) they told me I had to have 1,000 hours to get maternity leave but idk about over there I feel like every job is different tho. If you can’t get maternity leave just get unemployment until you go back.

So you won’t qualify for FMLA, you have to have been at your job for a year (in most states at least). That is the leave that protects your job for up to 12 weeks. You will more than likely still be approved for some sort of leave  30 days to 8 weeks depending on your recovery time. It’s unpaid though unless you pay into short term disability, then you might get 60% of your pay. Your company, however, may have a paid maternity leave you might qualify for. This can all vary greatly between companies and states though, you for sure need to ask your HR rep.

I work 2 jobs in california. With one, maternity leave is through unemployment office but the doctor fills out the papers and you send them out a week before your maternity leave would start. With my other job through the district, it is through the actual company and they emailed me the papers and I sent them in.
