You won’t have to technically “pay it back” but it was paid for with tax dollars so there is a very strong chance that taxes will increase. I’d be more concerned with the tax increases that will come if Biden is elected in November.

According to congress.gov 10-20% of what you received will be taken out of the taxes you get when filing for 2020 tax return.

Canadians that are affected will receive $8,000 over the next four months and we'll have to pay taxes on it as they aren't removing it from the payments. Probably 1,200 ish depending on your income. Money isn't free.
