Would you wait until all your debt is paid off to get married ?

Question

This question is for those who are married or wanting to get married. 
I ask this because debt could take years to pay off especially depending on what it is from. 
I also ask because my boyfriend’s mom does credit repair so she said we should wait so we don’t screw each other over. 
One I would never ever screw someone over like that to pay for my debt if things didn’t work out. 
Two my boyfriend knows the type of person I am. He knows i wouldn’t screw him over. 
Three wouldn’t you accumulate new debt while married anyway especially if one decides to go back to school.

I would say, depends what kind of debt. If it’s credit card, I would say yes. It’s not great to start a life together while in credit card debt. School and cars:house I would say no. If you get divorced, it’s easy to know whose it is since someone usually drives a specific car and one person goes to school.

I don't think I would unless it was a result of thier bad habits (meaning, if it's debt from buying a vehicle, it's fine. If it's debt from a credit card because he's an impulse buyer with no self control, that's not okay) but at the same time, I wouldn't marry someone who had bad financial habits to begin with
So all in all, I'd only marry someone who was smart with thier finances, and so I'd trust them to continue being smart about any debt they had, and would feel comfortable marrying them.

Me and my husband got together knowing we both had debt, mine much smaller than him (he has student loans)! We never even thought twice because in our marriage we are a team and we work together to pay it off! It doesn't screw the other person because it's only affecting your credit score! We've since bought a house and car so our debt has increased but we aren't stressing it! One day it'll all be gone ☺️

Has he proposed? You can still get engaged and hold off on wedding plans.
What’s the debt from? Student loans, I wouldn’t wait. They actually help for getting a mortgage if paid on time. 
Bad financial choices/spending? I’d wait to be sure the other person has changed their ways. Finances ruin relationships

Idk it’s so expensive to live these days that everyone is bound to have some debt at any time in their lives. Things like cars and houses are hard to buy without going into debt and if you add in school loans those can take a long time to pay off. So if you do wait, you could be waiting awhile until you’re completely debt free.

My husband only had about 3000$ in debt left from student loans and I had none when we got married. I don't think it matters. That being said you probably should not have a 30,000 dollar wedding on your own dime if you are already massively in debt. Just be wise with your spending and paying off the debt if you have it.

I may be wrong, but any debt accumulated before your marriage, is always your debt. Your name doesn’t automatically go into their loans or debt. So waiting is unnecessary unless you want to be debt free before paying for the wedding or buying a house? Which is smart, but getting married won’t affect anything

I would not wait. When I met my husband he had no debt. And I had student loans and a car loan. About 2 months after getting engaged he took on a car loan. We also bought a home together. We then did the math and quickly figured out we wanted a debt free life going forward. Together we have paid off my car and various small things (cell phones, some furniture we financed, a medical bill). My student loans will be done next month and his car will be done later this year. I'm glad we did not wait to get married until we were debt free. We are able to build our life the way we want it to be! And nobody is screwing anyone over.
