Adoption: what if birth parent changes their mind?

What happens if you have contracts (along with paid all expenses) and everything saying when this woman gives birth, we are adopting this baby. Then once she gives birth, she (or the father) decide they do not want to go through with the adoption?
Can she go back on the contract like that?  Is she forced to hand the baby over due to the contracts? 
I'm watching a show and it made me think about this. My husband and I plan to adopt one day, probably not am infant like this, but still. It makes me think about things like this.

Yes, there is a time period after birth where they can change their minds. 
They have anywhere from 48 hrs to 30 days. It depends on your state. So learn the laws of your state or really the state where the birth mother gives birth.

The birth parents can definitely change their mind. I want to say they have a 6 month window even after the baby is born to do so. Which is terrifying as the adoptive parents. I think it is all dependent upon the wording of the contract about what happens if that's the case.

I think in the contract they have a certain amount of time to change their minds even if you have a contract and paid money I think that’s why some ppl think surrogates are safer cause it’s ur baby they have to hand it over but I am not sure just from what I have seen from tv shows, it’s best to double check if you and ur husband decide to do either.
