Induction???

Question

My next appt is in a week when I’ll be 34 weeks. Because of Covid, the hospital restrictions are making it hard for us to find care for our three year old for when the time comes. I want to request a scheduled induction at 39 weeks so that I can have a specific date to have childcare lined up. I want to call my doctor now and ask because it’s giving me anxiety to wait another week but I don’t want to bug her. 
Do I go ahead and call and ask or wait? 
*I know the risks of induction, I did it with my son.

I strongly suggest waiting until you get to your appointment to talk about it and you don't induce earlier than 40 weeks.

Depending on where you are located your doc may not agree to an induction because of covid. My obgyn said that they are limiting inductions because of the longer hospital stays usually required. It’s great that you know the regular risks of induction - but now there are added risks of complication and a longer stay and higher chance of exposure to covid. I’m in a NYC suburb and due in July so things may change before then- currently my hospital is testing every mother that is admitted to LD and her birth partner and releasing vaginal deliveries as early as 6 hours postpartum with a goal of 12 hours max hospital admission. C-sections are getting a max of 24 hour admissions.

I would ask at your next appointment and explain the situation. Given covid and all they might accommodate but not all doctors are willing to induce at 39, some make you wait until 40. I’ve heard of some docs not wanting to induce until 40 with covid because they really want you to be in the hospital for a little time as possible so they want to wait it out longer. No harm in asking.

I know by hospital policy, no one is allowed to opt into an induction without it recommended by a doctor for a medical reason. It won’t hurt to ask but I am doing everything in my power not to be induced this time around.
