This guy and I were dating for a couple months, 6 months ago. We ended things on civil terms because I didn’t like his lifestyle, drinking smoking. hung out a couple times since as just friends and a couple times where things went further than they should have. Now my feelings are back towards him and he knows, but says he doesn’t want to set me up to get hurt. So now I’m feeling torn on what to do. I really care about him and miss the old days and idk why I can’t get over him.

You don’t like his lifestyle so I don’t see how it’s any different now if he’s still drinking and smoking?

I think you should stop talking to him. You don’t like his lifestyle and that would not work in a relationship, especially if he’s not willing to change it for you. And if those feelings are back you need to be able to move on before you can try to engage in a friendship with him and if you don’t think you can be friends with him without feelings then you should both go your separate ways

Lifestyle is huge, I was in the same boat in that I liked a guy who was into partying and smoking, those are things I absolutely do not like, not even in the slightest. So I told him that we wouldn't make a good couple, distanced myself from him and kept bringing myself back to reality. Whenever you feel infatuated with him you need to stop and ask yourself realistic questions like: are you ok if he's gone for hours at a party getting wasted? Would him stopping to take smoke breaks bother you? When you are yourself real questions like that it'll help you be more logical and it gets yourself out of that infatuation stage. A relationship is about more than just feelings.
