Is this guy protective?

So there’s this guy I’ve been talking to. We were hanging out and then he was going to drop me off but he noticed these two guys staring at me in the car. He noticed it and kept driving. He was like “I was going to leave you here but let’s not.” He proceeds to drive further and drops me off there. Now why would a guy do this? Does he care enough for my safety that he didn’t want to leave me there?
