On demand breastfeeding?

Do you breastfeed on demand or by schedule? My baby is almost 4 weeks and so far my dr and health nurse tell me to feed every 2-3 hrs and no more than 4-5 hrs between feedings at night. But sometimes when I wake him he doesnt eat, falls asleep, or is fussy. What is best for keeping up milk supply?

If baby has surpassed their birth weight & enough wet/dirty diapers, on demand is fine! If they go an extended period at night not feeding, you can always pump when you would’ve been feeding. Otherwise your supply will just level out to what baby’s demands are.

We are 25 weeks today (5.5 mos) and I still feed on demand 🤷🏽‍♀️. She’s basically made her own schedule though and I noticed it’s pretty consistent unless we hit a growth spurt

I definitely go on demand and my daughter sleeps 8 hours at night since 4/5 weeks old 😊 no supply issue. She eats every 2-3 hours in the day

The best way to keep your supply is to feed on demand (no more than 2-3 hours during the day, agreed). However, unless there is a problem with weight gain - I wouldn’t wake a sleeping baby. If you’re feeling engorged at night, you can always hand express a little bit into the sink or a milk bag until you’re comfortable.  I wouldn’t pump though, because it’ll signal your body to make more then (unless you’re trying to build a stash).
