If your SO is busy you can't hang out with someone else?

When I was starting to get serious with my boyfriend I got out of work early one day. He was off and I called him to meet up but he had plans already. I didn't mind being it short notice but I was hungry and told him I'd call a friend to meet up and hang out and grab a pizza or something.
He then asked me if he's not around would I just find someone else to hang out with? 
I said yes. I wouldn't mind if he did the same. I don't see anything wrong with it. I hardly get free time and hardly ever hang out with friends as I work 2 jobs and I take care of my grandma after. The thing is I never met up with anyone. I just went home after. He was still very upset with my response. He didn't let it go at all. He said it was disgusting.
But if my boyfriend can't hang out am I supposed to just go home? I can't hang out with friends?

You ARE allowed to have a life and people outside of him. If he can't cope with that, then he needs to stay single and get 50 cats who don't do anything but nap while he's gone

It is healthy to have friends and a social life even while in a relationship. Usually people who don't want their partner to have a social life are controlling or insecure.

That’s not how I operate. We have different schedules and before we had a baby, we saw other people more than we saw each other. Now that we have a baby, schedules are a little tighter due to daycare, but we still hang out with other people if we want to.
