Diabetes help?!

Question

Hello! I’ve recently gotten divorced and started dating a new guy. He’s a bigger guy and is a type 1 diabetic. I’m scared of it and I don’t want to be (my uncle passed away in a diabetic coma a few years ago.) He does 3 insulin shots a day and takes 1 pill a day!
I would be so appreciative of any and all info/tips on how I can help or just anything!!

I would read up on how carbohydrates and sugars works with insulin. Signs of high and low blood sugar. Always have some sugary snack or sugar tablets in your bag/car/hand bag just in case. Also have him show you where he has his glucagon emergency shot and how to use it.

Diabetes does not mean he’s going to die, it’s a very manageable disease as long as he’s doing his part to be responsible with managing his medications and diet. If he’s not then I would be careful about the relationship. At that point he can die or have multiple other health issues. I’m a nurse, hope this helps.

I dated a guy that was diabetic when I was in high school and we spent quite a bit of time together so my main thing for him was to make sure he remembered when he needed to take his insulin, checking his sugar level, and making sure he maintained the correct diet. Being as young as I was, I didn’t know much about being diabetic and I still don’t but I do have clients that are diabetic and I always keep a little bit of candy on me for emergencies (if their sugar is too low).

I’m a diabetic. It’s not an automatic death sentence. Diet and exercise plays a huge role in managing diabetes. Making sure he also takes his medication is a great start. Sticking with a low car diet and limiting sugars will do wonders.
