How common is it for a baby to ‘drop’ prior to labour?

I’m 2/5ths engaged but no sign of bump dropping yet. Is this a common thing? I’m 38 weeks today.

I never dropped with my first and haven't dropped this time either. I'm at 2/5 palpable, 4cm dilated, 40 weeks pregnant and I'm having possible contractions. The bump physically dropping is more to do with your abdominal muscles and gravity than anything else.

My friend just had her second baby and he dropped only 2 hrs before delivery. With first one her baby dropped around 40+5 and she went in labour at 41 weeks. I’m 37+3 and baby hasn’t dropped yet - my midwife said it’s perfectly normal.

First pregnancy a lot of women drop 2-3 weeks ahead of labor. 
After that it’s more of a mystery. My second didn’t “drop” until I was 7 cm dilated.
