Going of my last period I should be 6 weeks pregnant by now but the line just looks very faint to me

You could call your doctor and get blood work done. That's the only way to know for sure. Pregnancy tests do not indicate viable pregnancy. 
However you reach a certain point where you have so much hcg in your system that a pregnancy test can give a false negative. 
I was having dye stealers around 4 weeks so I imagine by 6 weeks if your numbers are doubling, the number is quite high. I'd stop testing at this point, because it's just going to make you worry. And call your doctor for some peace of mind.
