Do abusive men ever change?

Question

What do you think, if a man hits his partner once, is there any hope that he will never hit her or any other women in the future?
Asking because I found out my brother is a POS and hit his girlfriend a couple months back. Now she lives in fear of him doing it again next time they fight. He claims to her he will never do it again but we all know, you cannot trust an abuser. 
Ugh. I guess I would like peace of mind that he will never be the cause of physical pain on her or any other women ever again and I know that that’s up to him, only he can make that decision unfortunately, but has anyone seen where a man actually lives up to the promise of never doing something like that again? 
Hopefully his gf leaves his sorry ass, regardless. He should feel so ashamed.

If they don't have kids she should leave.  However If they stay together he needs to seek help because he has anger issues.  Regardless he needs to seek help bc he might have a mental health issue with anger control

She needs to leave him and she might need help leaving. He will do it again and it will get worse. It could get to the point where she is brutalized and he's in jail for more than just assault. If you don't do anything to help this woman, you might as well be beating her yourself.

it’s possible. my ex put hands on me like a couple times and then it stopped, he never did it again. he still had bad anger issues, but he didn’t do it again, even when i was so traumatized and would ask him to hit me when i thought i deserved it. your brother can change if he wants to, he needs to go to anger management classes, he needs to go to therapy. he should never put his hands on her again, there should never be a reason as to why he needs to do to a woman in general. if she lives in fear, she should leave him bc it’s not good to be with someone who has you walking on egg shells.

Not impossible, but extremely rare. He would need therapy, anger management classes, and it could take years. This is about working on himself, and she isn't obligated to wait around for him to change. 
As an aside, I know many families who would be on the side of the abuser just because "blood is thicker", kudos to you for supporting her.

Maybe. But the abuser themselves have to want that change & need to make changing their number one priority. Some say they want to change but wont put in any effort on doing so, so I guess it depends on how bad they really want to change their behavior.

I’ve always Hurd guys beg and plead saying how they’ll never do it again they’ll even be in tears and it always happens again and if anything the next times are worse. I’ve personally never in my life seen a guy never actually do it again.
