How long do you have to wake baby up every 3 hours to feed?

My baby is 6 weeks and I wake him every 3 hours to eat during the day so that he gets most of his calories during the day. I found that if he eats more he only wakes up once to eat at night. I feed him at 10 ish and he wakes up at 3 am to eat and will sleep again till 8-9 am

Birth weight is the divider but if you're not sure you can do a slow transition - instead of 3 hours, wake baby up at 4 hours for a week and then 5 for another week (if you get 5 hours straight ever).

With my son we had to wake for a couple months before he was able to wake himself. My daughter is 5 weeks and we don't wake her anymore (think we stopped at 4 months) because she started waking herself. We woke her every 4 hours at night and 2-3 hours during the day until then though.
