Can employer take away maternity leave?

I am getting 6 weeks paid maternity leave from my job. I do not intend on returning to work after having my son because financially I can afford to stay home. If I tell my employer I do not intend on returning after using my leave, can they choose not to give me the maternity leave that was offered?

They can if you tell them ahead of time you’re not coming back. I’d just call them towards the end of your leave and let them know you can’t come back

Read the contract, sometime even if your eturn you have to pay it back if you don't stay long enough.

Yes. It depends on the employer but they can do that. My employer requires me to work 480 hours after returning from maternity leave before I am able to leave my job. If i want to leave before then, I have to pay them back what I earned on my paid leave.

Ya they sure can and if you have insurance through your job that you plan on using during birth they can refuse to pay because you didn’t return.

I waited to tell my job until after I took all of my time. I got 18 weeks out of them, plus some thanks to Covid haha.

Make sure you know what your company’s policy really says. A lot of employers have a policy that you have to work x number of weeks or months after your leave ends or you have to pay something back. Mine job makes you pay your healthcare premiums that they cover for our 3 months of paid leave.

Im telling mine after I take the time off..They will not give you the time if you tell them sooner..

Give them standard notice for your position for example while I was on leave 2 weeks before I was supposed to return I notified my employer that at the end of my leave (with exact date) I would not be returning.
