4 Year Old Asking Where Babies Come From?

My 4 year old son has recently been asking me where babies come from. Pointing at old pregnancy photos of me and asking how a baby got in my belly and that type of thing. I was shocked he wanted to know that at this young of age. What is appropriate to disclose and what’s not ? I have two children but he is my oldest so I’ve never been through this before. 😩 Please help!

You be honest. It's not a dirty or shameful thing, it's a normal human process. When my niece was 4 she was present for her brother's home birth. It was not traumatic at all. 
Also at that age she would correct people who said the baby was in mom's 'stomach' by saying 'baby is in mom's uterus!'. I'm not a fan of hiding bodily experiences from children. If they don't learn it properly from you, they'll learn it improperly from some where else.

This is what is called a "teachable moment". Use your child's natural curiosity to breach the subject and explain (in simple terms).

Why not just be honest? I don’t know why parents overthink this sort of thing. It’s a very normal age to be having those discussions. My 3 year old knows she has a vagina and babies come out of it. She knows it takes a mommy and daddy to make one ( we haven’t touched upon things like IVF yet since it’s more medical and might be confusing and harder for her to comprehend). She knows women have a period and she knows about tampons. She knows men have a penis. There’s no reason to make it weirx.

Like other posters have said, use this as an opportunity to teach about the body. You don’t have to go into graphic detail, but answer the questions honestly with correct body terminology, “baby comes froYou can probably find lots of kids body book options too that you two can read together to help approach the topic.

Explain the different body parts everyone has. You don’t have to go into too much detail, but explain that men have a penis and women have a vagina. When a penis and a vagina come together, they can sometimes make a baby and the baby grows in the woman’s uterus.
Obviously there’s more nuance than that (sex, gender, IVF, etc.), but 4 year olds just need basic facts to start. It should be an on-going conversation that you return to throughout their childhood and teenage years. Starting now will make it easier as they grow.

For me I believe in God and that’s what I told my 4 year old who is asking for a sister. I told him it’s up to god for a baby. But I understand that answer is not for everyone.
