Yes to the dress

Please don’t mind my tiny messy living room! I just tried on my future mother in laws wedding dress.. and it fits! It’s about 40 years old and was surprisingly in good condition. We discussed just using pieces from the dress to add to a new one I’d find but I think I’ll surprise her and try to preserve this one as much as I can. I knew it was meant for me when it zipped right up. I personally don’t think I’d use the puff sleeves but keep the lower half to create pull up sleeves. My fiance had that one request so I’m happy to create new sleeves! I think I’ll keep the bodice but change the collar. Perhaps open it up and make a choker. Only need minor repairs and a good wash! We’re pushing to have the wedding next spring, so I know this will mean so much to her and our family. Please suggest anything else I should add because I’m open to it. I love this man and trying this on really gave me enthusiasm for our future life!

update:

I’m going to remove as little as possible. I washed the dress very carefully the other day and it’s a bit brighter now. I’m wondering if I should take it to be altered or just do it myself since it’s minor. What do you think?? I have some experience with sewing/altering clothes already.

Update 1/4:

My grandma surprised me by coming up to work on the dress! Brought her sewing machine too. We worked on the dress all day and made a lot of progress. Took out some lacing and came up with a way to save the sleeves. Gonna fill in some space on the train as well. Here are some pics so far!

Update 1/4:

Almost done with attaching the sleeves! Lil details and reinforcements now. Can’t believe we got so much done so quickly! Love that I got to be apart of it with someone for such a special day.
