How much does a puppy normally cost?

So I’ve been looking for a puppy for a few months now. I’ve been looking for a dachshund but it is SO hard to find them! I’ve joined a bunch of Facebook groups etc, but most of them are wanting around $1000 a piece 😵 Is this a normal price or are they over charging? I’ve thought about just going to a shelter and adopting a puppy there, but I’ve adopted many shelter dogs in the past and I’ve been wanting a dachshund for so long.

Unfortunately that sounds about right if you’re wanting a specific breed of dog, especially if you get it from a breeder. 
You could look on Craigslist, sometimes they’re cheaper there. 
Also, it seems like shelters often have dachshunds or dachshund mixes so you could look there to help out a good cause!

I am personally on team adopt, don't shop but if you are set on 1 breed and can't find one at a rescue/ shelter please make sure you thoroughly research and vet any breeder. They should be willing to give you full medical histories of both parents, how many litters that specific dog has had/how frequently, and let you tour if you want. See where the dog live, how they are treated, where the puppies will be..basically full transparency. Good reputable breeders will be 1000+ because they put a lot of time and resources into the dogs. Less than that and you risk puppy mills. Besides puppy mills being high risk for animal abuse and horrible conditions as they see the dog as a quick buck and not much else it can be bad for you as a potential owner since they aren't honest a lot of times. You won't know if the puppies are healthy, parental traits/health or if they were properly bred. Inbreeding or improper breeding can lead to dogs with all sorts of health issues...neurological issues, higher chance for cancers, seizures, bone/muscle issues. There are dachshunds that end up at rescues or shelters as people will get them and know nothing about their breed traits and and up not wanting it or handling it. Look locally but even nationally. A lot of dog specific rescues have transports that will bring dogs to people. My sister got her purebred miniature royal dachshund from a rescue. The person bought it then couldn't handle the personality traits so dumped it...sad but happens to all dogs. Good luck and hope you find the new fur family member you want!!

We bought both of our dogs from breeders. My toy Aussie was $950 and our bloodhound was $750. If you want a specific breed from a good breeder, you’ll most definitely pay quite a bit. Also depends on if you want breeding rights or not. If you decline breeding rights the price is a tad lower which is why ours weren’t $1000+ but we got all of the paperwork and bloodline information. We also had to agree that if we could no longer care for our dogs, we would return them to the breeder and wouldn’t allow them to go to a shelter. Read all of the reviews on the breeder and do plenty of research before buying.

If you’re open to a dachshund mix you could put an alert out for shelters within a few hours of you. Sites like petfinder.com are really good for that. However if you’re specifically looking for a puppy it limits your results (as almost everybody wants a puppy so they go really fast from the shelters) and if you want a purebred you’re likely going to have to go to a breeder. 
I’m not familiar with dachshunds specifically, but that price is pretty normal for a purebred puppy. It usually covers health scans, potentially a first round of shots, and generally gives a health guarantee. (Whereas sometimes there are puppy mills or sketchy breeders where health and quality blood lines aren’t their concern, dogs could be inbred, not receive proper care, or are separated from their mother too early and have potential health issues down the road or even very soon after. Most purebred breeder fees are anywhere from $650-1500+ depending on the breed you want. 
I have a gorgeous German shepherd who I got from a breeder - we checked shelters first but my SO at the time had a dog already who could be irritable with other dogs so we wanted to get a puppy. I also wanted a young dog I could train as this was my first dog. I got her for $750 which actually was a really good price, and the breeder gave us $100 off (originally she was $850 as females can cost more). 
But honestly dogs are expensive, so if the $1000 seems too high for you, I’d think about whether or not you can afford a dog. I know it seems like a lot at one time, but it’s an investment. Shots are expensive, so are vet visits, food, supplies, etc.

You actually DONT want to pay less than that really. It sounds bad, but it’s wayyy more likely to be a puppy mill if you’re getting a deal on a dog. Responsible breeders typically charge more. 
If you’re really wanting a daschund try joining daschund Facebook groups and seeing if you can find some rescue service for the breed. I have 3 friends with that type of dog and they’re all rescues.
