Background:
I’ve posted a few times about miss Harriet’s feeding problems. To fill people in though, she has severe reflux that she aspirates on (breathes into her lungs) which causes lung infections. They also think it’s likely she has what is known as primary aspiration which is where when she swallows it goes straight into her lungs instead of down her oesophagus.
Because of this she isn’t allowed to have any food into her stomach and has a feeding tube straight into her intestines that she is fed slowly with 22 hours (minimum a day).
Before we can have ANY oral intake at all we need a specific test, but because of covid, these tests aren’t being done, and it’s looking like it will be next year before we will be able to get it done. 😭😭😭
We’ve been given approval to let her suck on food but there are numerous rules so we don’t really know what we can give her. It can’t be anything where she is able to swallow any of it, so nothing that will mush up or dissolve. Juice can’t come off when she sucks, like apple, because she is a risk of that going into her lungs.
Has anyone got any ideas?
We gave her a chunk of raw carrot last night and she was not impressed!
