Technically you can start buying whenever you want but I would wait until you are in the safe zone around 12 weeks and the chances of miscarriage decreases immensely.

Our first actual purchase was around 25 weeks. I did get a bunch of free or super cheap secondhand items like clothes once we found out the gender.

Considering the experts tell you not you even tell people till after 12 weeks I'd say you should wait till after you find out the gender or around that time if you don't wanna know.
