Plagiocephaly (one sided flatness). Does he need a helmet?

My son just turned 5 months and he has torticollis which caused his flatness to happen. I’ve been going to a chiro who treats his torticollis and performs craniosacral therapy (basically shaping the head). I have also been repositioning him which I couldn’t before because his torticollis was too bad.  
I am wondering if I should make an appt to get a helmet or not. I’m not sure how fast acting this chiro stuff is and I don’t want to miss my window. Has anyone experienced a similar situation and can give me some suggestions? Thanks!

I do think your kiddo would need one but only because my son had the same thing. We asked our ped and they gave us a referral. The earlier you get the helmet, usually the less time they will need to be in it.

You may want to make an appointment to get evaluated. When my son’s PT and OT measured his head his flat spot wasn’t bad enough to warrant a helmet.

What a cutie! I would recommend getting assessed by a specialist. My son had mild asymmetry that looked similar to your
Son and he did qualify for a helmet at around 7.5 Months. Many kids will have slow improvement on their own, but often need a little shaping help, esp with a diagnosis of torticollis. 
My sons asymmetry made his head look flatter than it was and once that was addressed it looked better.Ultimately we had lots of issues with the helmet and didn’t end up continuing but we saw lots of improvement! He still has some residual flatness but that was because we didn’t continue. The earlier you do it, the better & faster!

My step brother when he was a baby he had formed a flat head as well. However I don’t know what the cause of it because I didn’t meet him until he was 6. I do know that he did have to wear a helmet. If your heart and gut is telling you to see if your son needs a helmet then I don’t see the harm in it. You are only looking out for his best interest.
