it doesn’t really smell like anything but it’s not a lot. it‘s enough to be like “okay what’s that” but it’s not soaking my undies ?

I believe the leaking of amniotic fluid is a slow continuous leak. Like when you turn your faucet halfway off and that trickle has a steady flow.

My continued to leak over a period of weeks, I was wearing a pad in my knickers because of my discharge so I hadn't actually noticed that I was leaking fluid until I went to my midwife appointment and they noticed there was an issue.

When I had a leak, it was enough that my pants were damp. Not soaking, but definitely went through my underwear. I'd get spurts off and on throughout the day after laying down or sitting. If your underwear is just a tiny bit wet sometimes, I'd dismiss it. But if it's frequent, or more than just slightly damp, I have a better safe than sorry mentality. The consequences are heavy enough that it's worth getting checked if you think it's grey area.
