Down Syndrome Test?

Question

At my first prenatal appointment my doctor asked me if i wanted to test for down syndrome. She said some say yes and some say no so i’m curious is to why that is? Did y’all get the test done? Should I? What does it consist of?

It’s just a blood test.
Most say no because they will love baby either way and don’t want to know.
I said yes because while I would love the baby either way I would want the time to prepare and educate myself.

It’s part of the genetic blood testing you can do if you’d like. They can also check the thickness of the neck during the ultrasound. If it’s over a certain number it’s a marker for downs, if it’s under that number it’s unlikely the baby has it.

I did the test but not bc of Down syndrome. We also found out the gender that way!

I'm happy I did. 
Even though it can't exactly tell you if gives you an idea low or high risk. 
It can help you plan for your future. 
Plus I had a soft marker for it on my ultrasound, and because I had already gotten the blood work showing I was very low risk I didn't stress as much.

There are 2 different tests. One is a blood test NIPT  (most accurate), the other is an ultrasound called the NT or nuchal translucency  (less accurate, shows signs but not a diagnosis). I did both. But the blood test isn't always covered.

I did it cuz my insurance covered it and i dont know my family history because im adopted so i wanted to be prepared.

We chose to get the test. We knew that we'd keep our little boy either way, but wanted to be prepared if there was something wrong. 
They usually want you to get it done if you're of "advanced maternal age" lol (35 or older). If it's the NIPT blood test, it tests for genetic abnormalities and can also tell you the gender of your child. If it's the NT scan, it's just another opportunity to see your little baby.

I’ll be honest, we only did it because insurance was covering it-most do not but I’m in my mid 30s so they will.  We spent so much money this year on fertility/IUIs yes we want a healthy child but at this point we want a child no matter what that that brings with it.  If ins. didn’t pay I figure if it’s life threatening they’ll see if before delivery and if it’s not we adapt and survive🤷🏼‍♀️ it’s a very persons decision though so I could never speak for anyone else’s thoughts/feelings on it.
