Parents Not Celebrating Graduation?

Hi guy, I just graduated today from the university.  My celebration plans were to have something small with my parents and perhaps two friends. I looked into either lunch or dinner. So in the morning my mother asks where I'd like to go for a meal and I suggested 3 places that we can pick one and go to. Even with the suggestions, she started suggesting places that she herself wanted to go and the  restaurant  she insisted is one of my worst to me. I have had their food before and did not enjoy it one bit. The same restaurant is within the same range as the one I had picked ( in terms of costs). Now i refused to go to that restaurant and told her that since it's my day atleast i should be the one picking a place i would enjoy more. She hasnt spoken to me since then, the day is almost over and I'm just here at home watching movies on my graduation day. What i understood was that if we can not go as per her suggestions,  then we cant go for a meal. I really feel bad about this because it's a big day for me worth a little celebration.  I'm I overreacting?

Second, theres no reason for you to NOT go to have dinner in that place you enjoy with your friends. Or by yourself is also amazing!  You do not need her to celebrate.

Your mom is the one who shouldn’t have made you feel like crap especially after graduation. It’s YOUR day so you had every right to NOT want to eat where she wanted to eat.

Second, I would tell her those last sentence you wrote. Maybe you guys can still go out and have a meal to celebrate. The location is really not the most important thing about this day and a mother should see that. If she is so against you choice, maybe there can be a third alternative everyone is happy with? Or just have drinks or so. You shouldn’t be alone in this day, if you already had a celebration planned 😊

Did you make a suggestion and try to set plans in stone? You could have said “I’m not a fan of that restaurant. I’d rather go to (xyz restaurant) instead for my celebration. How about we meet there at 6:00? Does that work for you?” Your mom probably just assumed that since you turned down her suggestion and didn’t give an alternative that maybe you just weren’t interested anymore. Maybe her feelings were hurt because she was trying to plan something for you and you didn’t want to go there. I totally get that it sounds selfish of her to choose a place she likes instead when it’s your day. But you gotta work with her a bit too.

Maybe suggest your mom pick up to-go orders from both restaurants and celebrate at home. I would avoid eating at restaurants right now (unless you are in a covid-free country).

Is it somewhat possible she has a surprise planned at that restaurant and that’s why she didn’t say anything else? I don’t want to get you excited in case there isn’t one. You are right that it is your day. But in the end it’s just food.
