How long do you need to chart?

Hello guys im new to this bbt charting thing, and I am currently on bc(the pill) but this is my last month on it. AF is due Dec. 24th. I am planning to start taking prenatals from January 1st. And then I would also like to start recording bbt as soon as my period stops. My husband and I are planning to start ttc starting april 1st. If I tract for the 3 months until april is this enough time to get a good idea of when I will ovulate? Or is this to short of a time period to notice a pattern?

You really should do it while TTC. The whole time. The body doesn't follow a perfect pattern so you can't rely on it to blindly apply every month. BBT also gives you other data in real time. I would absolutely not quit before TTC. That pretty much defeats the whole purpose.

Start from the first day of your period not after it’s finished. Make sure you do it the whole time your ttc as it can change month to month when you ovulate 
Make sure you get 3 solid hours sleep 
Make sure it’s exactly the same time everyday when you first wake up eg 6am 
Make sure you have a proper bbt thermometer with 2 decimal points x
