Confused as to WTH is going on 🤔🤔

Me and my guy best friend have been friends for years. We started to become intimate a year ago (friends with benefits). Recently I told him this should probably come to an end soon since this can’t go on forever.

Then he randomly asked me if I wanted to be his girlfriend??? I was shook AF 😭😭what exactly is that supposed to mean? Is he asking me to be his girl because he likes me? Or am I missing Something?? P.s he’s asked me this question twice and I have yet to answer
