1 vs 2 embryo?

Hi! I am doing IVF for the first time and was discussing 1 vs 2 embryo transfer for my frozen transfer. My RE doctor seems very against 2 embryos. I'm looking for guidance as to what to do. I am 26 so maybe that's why he's saying no? Any success stories on first round with either or even constructive feedback on if you did one and wished you did the other? Thank you!

I am so glad I didn’t do two. My first round (although genetically tested) was successful. There’s less risk to both my baby and myself, as I’m sure both would have stuck if I transferred two. I had a family member that had 2 stick on her fifth or so transfer. Her pregnancy was extremely hard, and fraught with complications. The financial and time burden of two infants at once was tough on her and her husband. My RE’s entire practice adheres pretty stringently to the guidelines. You wouldn’t qualify for a double embryo transfer the first time around here, either. I’m extremely skeptical of these clinics that don’t adhere to the recommendations and the research. They’re likely trying to bump their numbers, which is pretty unethical.

Most doctors recommend 1. Generally 2 are only recommended if there are extenuating circumstances. My doctor suggested 2 for me but I was in my mid-30s, had 4 prior early MC and no successful pregnancies.

I originally wanted 2, i really would love twins, but it is VERY risky for you and babies. After my first IVF retrieval resulted in 0 blasts, my second we were just lucky to get any blasts in the first place. We got 3 good quality - the smartest move for us was to just transfer 1 at a time so that we had the best chances for success. In reality, transferring 2 doesn't increase the odds enough in 1 transfer cycle - for instance if your lining isn't receptive neither will implant and you just lost 2.  But 3 separate chances made more sense to be able to get everything right and additional testing in between rounds if needed. Our first transfer worked, so we still have potential for a second baby.

1 is standard. When you see those videos of people transferring 2, its usually due to an underlying reason. Such as over 40, failed transfers, recurrent miscarriages, etc. My re is going to transfer either 2 or 3 for me bc all my embryos stop growing in the lab so the chances of me becoming pregnant are slim even with 3 going in

We transferred two per my doctors recommendation but I’m in my 30’s. 1 took and I’m currently 6w5d 😊

In addition to the reasons others have shared - if you are planning to have the embryos genetically tested, then definitely only transfer one. There’s a very small chance the embryo could split and result in identical twins. If you transferred two genetically tested embryos, that means there’s a chance (though very, very small) you could end up pregnant with 3-4...and that introduces even more significant complications. I know it’s so hard to stay patient and tame your anxiety thru all this but your doctor is looking out for what’s best for you and what path will give you the best shot at a successful pregnancy.
