Toy trains- what brand type are you doing?

Question

My son has been totally into Elmo for months. Now he’s onto trains and Elmo. He likes the show Thomas and friends a lot!! 
Thinking of getting him some wooden Train & track set for his birthday in early March. 
Any recommendations for a good frustration free train set? 
Seems like there are a few brands out there. Are they compatible with each other?
What do you have? What do you like/dislike about it?

I like the Melissa and Doug ones.  I found a train table at a rummage sale with trains and tracks for $15. Both my kids love playing with it. And the Melissa and Doug trains we already had work on it too

We got him this one off of marketplace for Christmas and he’s obsessed! It came with a bunch of trains, tracks accessories. From what I can tell they’re Brio, Melissa and Doug and IKEA. So they’re all compatible with each other. He loves pushing the trains and saying choo choo! I think it’s so great for their imagination!
