Oversupply
I am 3 weeks postpartum and I didn't know it was possible to produce too much milk. I spoke with my two lactation consultants. They're trying to help me slow down my supply. I'm running out of room in my freezer and the top shelf in my fridge is for baby milk. I pump once a day now. I technically don't need to pump. I hand express for about ten minutes and get about 200ml of milk. In a day I express 800‐1200ml of milk. I wasn't expecting this. Both my mother and grandmother had a short supply.
Everyone says it's a blessing, but I feel miserable. I keep leaking through my shirts and wake up in a puddle of milk. My breasts hurt from the swelling, I have to keep beating them to keep the milk from clogging. There's milk everywhere in the house. Baby boy is 3 weeks and drinking 4oz of milk almost every session. Sometimes I leak for hours on end.
But, despite my misery, one of my lactation consultants is helping me donate milk for NICU babies and I couldn't be more happy to help other little beans in need. I'm putting together a supply of milk for donation while having a supply for my own little bean. It's rough. I feel like a buffet restaurant, but I'm happy my baby boy has enough to eat and that I can help others.
