Getting a PhD???

Question

I’m about to finish up my undergrad degree as a double major in biology and psychology. I’m also a non-traditional student with a family. I’m really interested in getting my PhD, but we also really want to expand our family. Is it realistic to do both or would it be too hard?

Won’t you have to get a Master’s first? I don’t think you can go straight into a PhD program. I could be wrong.....If you have another kiddo while in your program, it’s unlikely that you’ll finish on time, which is fine. Just be prepared for it to take longer to finish. Personally, if a PhD was the goal, I would either wait to have more kids or wait on the PhD until the kids are older.

Not unrealistic at all. A college friend of mine had her first baby while we were still undergrads, single mom the father wasn’t in the picture at all, and she finished undergrad and got 2 Master’s. I did a couple Master’s classes when my first was a baby and found it too difficult for me, but it’s definitely possible.

I’m working on my PhD in pharmacology and TTC baby number 2. I’m currently in my second year, and don’t let anyone tell you it’s impossible. Some days it’s hard some days it’s easy, I’m planning to give birth a couple months after my qualifying exams so its not to hectic whenever the baby arrives. It really depends on your PI relationship, my program knows my situation and respects my boundaries and I’ve become a pro at time management. I’d also mention that although I get a graduate stipend as income my husband also works full time, and we have a couple smaller regular sources of income that make up for my grad stipend so as a non traditional student… I don’t live the grad student ramen for dinner kinda lifestyle and enjoy better quality of life compared to other younger students in my program.

Is the program you're interested in one where you get your masters as part of it or do you still need to complete that  first? Will you go to school full time? 4-6 years is the average time it takes to complete a program.  The average cost a year is $45k.  How will you pay for that?  Is the degree you are looking atsomething that will significantly increase your earnings potential? Are you and your SO on the same page about what future child care  looks like or who the stay at home parent is?  There's no such thing as an easy or quick doctorate program so it all really depends on what your priorities and goals are.
