Autism ?

Ashley

Ok I might be a spastic FTM or maybe because I’m more “aware” but I’m wondering if I should be concerned about my daughter.

She’s very smart for her age (so I’m told). She knows most of her alphabet, can read and identify colors, can count to 10, knows her name, and is learning the planets as of this week.

She’s in daycare with other kids too.

Lately I’ve noticed that when she gets excited (not always but usually) she starts flapping her hands. She responds to her name, makes eye contact, expresses emotions (mostly tantrums mixed with laughing and high pitched squeals) and she can answer yes/no questions. But the flapping. It’s getting to me.

Should this be something to monitor or am I over thinking this? Anyone else’s kid doing something similar or had this with another kid of theirs? I know it’s minor but I work in child therapy and it’s always been a concern of mine if my child would be diagnosed with ASD. I would want to ensure early intervention ASAP but I also don’t want to overreact to something that’s normal.

I’m not around little kids her age at work, so I’m not really exposed to “normal” behavior outside of what the textbooks say.

Any insight? TIA!
