Are Gender Reveals Antiquated?

Is having a “gender reveal” a thing of the past? I know that gender is a heated topic and that there are those who see having a gender reveal as tacky or antiquated celebration since nowadays young people are more able than ever to present themselves as the gender they feel is truest to them on the inside (despite what genitalia they are born with). How do you mommas feel about this kind of baby party? How do your partners feel? What about your kids? Have you done it? Would you do it again? Decidedly against them? I’m torn on it.

We did a big party with our family and friends with our first and everyone seemed to have a good time.  This time around we’re doing a small reveal with family only and will share with friends via social media.  COVID big factor in the decision but we’re also just too busy right now to throw a big party.  The first time around we knew the gender and surprised everyone else.  This time we’re going to put one person in charge of being the secret keeper so we can be surprised.  I know a lot of people say reveal parties are outdated but I’m a firm believer in doing what ever makes you happy.  This is your pregnancy to celebrate however you choose to

I have never done one but think they are fun. Celebrating a baby in many ways is never antiquated. And I think the reason for them being “antiquated” is completely ridiculous. I live in an incredibly progressive area and people still do them all the time and have never heard this redic reasoning.

I think they’re fun if you want to do it. We didn’t do a “reveal” party with my boys either time but I was going to do it the first time with my immediate family. We decided against it and still told them in person. My second we just called everyone. This time we won’t find out until birth and plan on introducing baby in person by name to all of the grandparents (hopefully covid regulations are much less strict and I can have visitors but who know) it’s just a personal preference. I didn’t have baby showers either but I would’ve like to have them.

Were doing it. Something small. And only because we already have 1 boy and 1 girl which we never thought to do gender reveals for them.

We did a huge party with our first. It was so much fun! My girlfriend knew 4-5 weeks before I got to find out. It was torture waiting!
My husband and I talked about waiting until birth this time because neither of us cared what sex. We love having a girl but would be excited with something different because every child is different anyway... I didn’t make it. The doctor called and I was so excited to hear all the genetics were good I just couldn’t stand it and wanted to know. I ended up doing a little gender reveal with my husband & daughter & family(via FaceTime) that night. It was fun and intimate. It’s always great to celebrate new life & every part of your new child.

Have a genitalia party! I was watching a video by a non-binary that said that they celebrate their daughters gender because until she states otherwise she is more than likely to identify as her given gender. That is the norm statistically. They didn’t want to force their identity onto her. So who cares!!! Get some free diapers and eat some cake.

We’re team green, so we aren’t worried about the gender we just pray for a healthy baby! I personally want to feel the excitement of “it’s a boy!!” Or “it’s a girl!” after going through labor. It gives so much excitement waiting for their arrival and a fun guessing game for everyone all the way up until the day of their birth. Plus, if you’re really wanting a certain gender, it’s not like you can change it once the deed is done, lol! 
I think this is a completely personal choice though, so if you’re someone who would like to know and plan everything out waiting for their arrival, then I’d think the gender reveal party would be a fun way to celebrate your baby coming! 
At the end of the day, it’s up to you and hubs and whatever makes YOU happy!!

It totally depends on you! 
We didn’t find out the sex of our first baby until birth so a gender reveal wasn’t even an option. We have found out the sex during this pregnancy but probably won’t be doing a gender reveal.
It’s a personal choice as I know family members that have experienced loss in late pregnancy and stillbirths. So for me pregnancy is quite a private experience and I typically don’t celebrate until the baby has entered the world.
My husband lost his mum during childbirth so all the more reason to celebrate after birth once mum and baby have somewhat recovered.
As an alternative, in my husbands culture they have a “sixth night” celebration. It’s when close relatives come to the family’s house and celebrate the birth of the child. However it’s done on the sixth night after baby is born. On this night the birth is celebrated, and often gifts are bought for the baby like a shower - but traditionally no one holds the baby except the mum and dad and everyone is encouraged to keep a respectful distance. It’s quite a ceremonial night.
