Please help: After surgery bleeding/late period?

So I had surgery over the new year and after I had really bad and heavy bleeding while in the middle of that cycle for a week. My period came but it was shorter than normal. My boyfriend and I are pretty active but always use protection and I always take my pill. I'm now a couple days late even tho I've had some cramps and all the typical symptoms before my period like being a little moody, the discharge, etc. I don't know if I should worry or just wait. It's freaking me out a little.
