How in the hell do you brush their teeth?!

My LO is 1, and he has 4 teeth on top, and 4 on the bottom. I have a toothbrush that I used occasionally until I noticed plaque on the bottom teeth. So I scraped it off with a tooth scraper (he surprisingly allowed me) and I bought some toothpaste. Only thing is he screams bloody murder when I try! I have to do it when he is laying down on the diaper table. 
Any tips!?

Did you get kiddy toothpaste? Also I think baby is young enough to just use water if it’s the taste that baby doesn’t like . My son likes to do it himself but he’s a baby who wants to do it all by himself

Mine has been brushing her own since 6 months when they came in. I show her how to do it and she is really good about doing to for herself. If I try and fights me. She's been to the dentist and they said her teeth look great.

My little one has a play toothbrush and a proper one. She likes having her teeth brushed, we did it since she had 2 teeth
