Tacky? Or a good idea?

Question

I have been with this guy for 2.5 months (as his girlfriend) but we have been hanging out for 6 months total.
His family is Portuguese. He wants me to meet his family - especially his parents - who speak very broken English he has said and that he will have to translate because 98% of the time they speak Portuguese. 
BTW I haven't been able to meet them due to covid and them being a little older. So no he isnt hiding me from them lol.
I want to attempt to learn a little bit of Portuguese. I know you can't be fluent overnight. But is that tacky or a good idea? I mean I like this guy. I haven't met his parents yet but they raised a good man for sure! I wanna make a kind effort and gesture. Yay? Nay?

It's a great idea. As a someone coming from a different country, with a different native language it means so much to us when someone takes the time to learn a little bit of it to communicate. Most of my relatives have left our country and have relationships and marriages with foreigners. When some of them come to visit, we all get excited when their partners know how to say hello, thank you or something as basic. They are putting in the effort. Especially older generations appreciate it. 
It's not tacky it's actually very nice of you. Obviously you can't learn a language overnight, but the basics are more than enough. Knowing how to say hello, thank you, goodbye, water, mis or sir or mom and dad or grandma or grandpa. And a compliment or two like very nice (if they cooked dinner for you) etc. If they do cook for you, be sure to learn about their cousine (like national dishes) so you can appropriatelly compliment, like your *national food dish* is wonderful *name*.
You can even learn how to introduce yourself like Hello my name is Xx, it's nice to meet you. For sure they will appreciate it and you will start off right with them, like a great first impression.
It can mean a lot to your boyfriend too. Maybe try saying I love you to him in his language. See how he'll respond.
