I’m 24 and I let my 18 year old sister stay with me as she is basically the outcast of the family for be a little to free with herself. I couldn’t let my sister be homeless so I took her in. She goes to school online and I got her a job. She doesn’t have a license or a car. But there is a major issue she keeps doing and idk how to give proper punishment to it. She has a curfew for 12, safety reasons, I live in New Orleans, I went over with her and she agreed to this time herself. However, she constantly leaves at 1-3am and comes back around 5-8am. During this time my door is unlocked, and everyone is sleep. I’m tired of her doing this and would tell her to leave since she can’t follow simple rules. But I also can’t throw my sister to the curb with no where to go. Suggestions??

I think you should be strict with her. Tell her the next time she goes out that door, when she get back it will be locked (if she had a key take it). Tell her that if she breaks the rule again that she will have to go back and live with your mom.

I think you should take away the curfew. She is 18 and an adult. She can make her own decisions. However, I think it is reasonable to push the need to keep doors locked for the safety of others in the house. Tell her she can either be mindful of the others in the house and lock up after herself OR she can leave.

She's at that age where "I'm 18 I can do whatever I want now!" You can try sitting her down and letting her know that yeah, she is an adult. But even adults still need to respect the roof they are living under, and if that means leaving late at night then don't plan on coming back until the morning when you're awake. The door will be locked until x-time if she plans on heading out. Wyze sells cheap home security stuff (cheap, but still good quality) and you can get a door sensor to alert you when the door opens when you'd be asleep. Then you could get up and lock the door (me being me, I'd also invest in a chain lock for the door so it's clear I mean what I say) one of those are $10 at Home Depot if you don't have one already.

Take her key at night. I’d sit down with her and have a serious talk, explain that you’re happy to have her with you, but you have your house rules in place for a reason and she needs to respect them. Bc she’s broken your trust already, if she has a house key, I’d take it from her. You could try just having her give it to you every night, but if she’s sneaky she might just make a copy of it, so in that case personally I’d add a deadbolt/chain lock to your door so that even if she does come back and try to get in, she won’t be able to. Set an alarm for yourself a few times to check and see if she’s there and if she’s not, lock the door. Ignore her if she knocks and tries to come back in.
